Memorable Quotes (Part 126)

"A military operation involves deception. Even though you are competent, appear to be incompetent. Though effective, appear to be ineffective." -- The Art of War by Sun Tzu.

Lazy Days

As you might have noticed the frequency of posts on this very blog has slowed down this and the last week. Currently I am not lacking the will to play (or talk about) VtES, but the motivation to write posts. I am quite sure I am over the hump soon, at least when the European VtES Championship is about to start in a little more than a month.

Sengir

Do you wonder where the Sengir Dagger derives its name from?

Back in '94 when Wizards of the Coast and Richard Garfield were designing the original Jyhad right (after they had published Magic the Gathering (MtG) a year earlier), the word Sengir got somehow transferred from MtG to VtES.

In the first MtG edition ("Alpha") the card "Sengir Vampire" is a black creature card with 4/4 and flying which gets a +1/+1 counter each time the Sengir Vampire is damaging another creature and moving it into the graveyard. The card has been reprinted multiple times, with M2012 being the last expansion where Sengir Vampire was included.

So what's all this fuss about Sengir vampires, what are they exactly. Well, they don't actually fit in the whole World of Darkness of White Wolf. The background story is completly separate.

Sengir is the name of vampire race in the MtG multiverse (allegedly similar to the similar to the Nosferatu breed). Sengir Vampires are said to be descendants of the legendary Baron Sengir on the planes of Dominaria and Ulgrotha.

Apparently the infamous Baron Sengir is the founder of this particular breed of vampires, as described in the book Secrets of Magic. He's ruling his the Dark Barony on Ulgrotha from Castle Sengir. A whole more information on Baron Sengir can be found in the MtG Salavation Wiki.

Currently there have been nine cards published with the name "Sengir" in its title, namely:

Did you know, that ... (Part 76)

.. if Count Zaroff diablerizes a vampire he first gets the equipment, blood from the diablerized vampire and a Discipline card, and then he goes to the uncontrolled region after that (if the Count's controller chooses to pays a pool). This follows straight from the order how a Diablerie is conducted in VtES. At first the Diablerie effects are resolved (according to the section 6.5.5 of the rulebook), the diablerist may take the equipment, the victim is burned, etc. And only after that the Blood Hunt is conducted (according the rules in section 6.5.6).

Real men don't need Dominate!

Some Antediluvians discussing the origins of vampires:
...
Malkav: Ooo! Ooo! I've got an idea!
Ventrue: What?
Malkav: Ooo! Ooo! We're ALL ... aliens! Yeah! From the planet ... Yuggoth!
Brujah: Malkav?
Malkav: Yeah?
Brujah: Drop dead. (silence)
Malkav: Ain't it just too bad you don't have Dominate?
Brujah: Real men don't need Dominate! (THUD)
Malkav: Owww!

Plans for VtES Fan Expansion

On July 19th, 2011 the VEKN (the VtES players organization) send out a call of artists, which asked if there any volunteers who will provide artwork (for free) for an upcoming VtES fan expansion. Yesterday (September 15h, 2011) these plans became more substantiated, when the VEKN disclosed more details for the aforementioned fan expansion. The development of expansion is spearheaded by a small design team lead by Ben Peal (three time north-american champion and involved in the development of previous VtES expansions). The release date will (hopefully) not too far into the future, because the VEKN don't want to let slip VtES into a slumber, it may not awake from eventually.

In addition, the VEKN is both asking for general input and ideas for upcoming VtES expansions as well as asking for play testers (or more specific play testing groups). And finally all players are encouraged to share their card ideas in the respective VEKN subforum. These cards may or may not be used by the design team, but may inspire and help the team members in the design process.

Rise From Your Grave!

Not the same La SombraI am not too enthusiastic about reposting/cross-posting, but this one is certainly worth it. The Lasombra (VtES player and archivist extraordinaire) is offering to host websites with VtES content that have disappeared from the internet one time or another. But read his post for yourself:
Old V:TES websites that have disappeared from the web can be rehosted. The second such site is Kindred Whispers from 2004. Do you have an old V:TES website that isn't being hosted anymore (Geocities victim, etc.) that you have the source code for? Contact me about hosting it for you. There is a new page that will list all of these types of sites that I am hosting, Rise From Your Grave!.
You can contact him by the email address given above as well as on the VEKN.net forum (where he roams under the alias Adonai).

Gelsenkirchen VtES League 2011: September 7th

Here I wanted to show you the decks of the Gelsenkirchen VtES League 2011 from the meeting on September 7th, 2011.
  • Thomas continued his bad seating luck seamlessly from the last league sessions. He played a Weenie Vicissitude Corrupt Construction deck, and guess who showed up as his predator? Sebastian Goulet with his special ability to steal allies! So Thomas resorted to playing a Weenie Computer Hacking deck with the occasional rush (using Breath of the Dragon), but he was simply slower in ousting his prey than his predator and got ousted rather quickly (in round 8).
  • A new deck was played Martin, a Midcap Obf/Cel/Pre(?) deck with equipment (fetched with Baltimore Pier, 13), but since he lacked both the equipment (guns for what I have (not) seen) and a decent defense, he was under pressure during the midgame, and so his pool was reduced significantly by Thomas. So weakened, Martin was an easy (next) prey for Zille (also in round 8).
  • Right: Ralf played a Weenie/Midcap Tzimisce Bleed deck and although he had to take some bleed initially, he was never really in danger of being ousted by Martin. So he could build up nicely, while bleeding Zille steadily for 2-3 using Camera Phones/Fiendish Tongue and Changelings, although occasionally his bleeds were redirected to Thomas, which also helped in Thomas' downfall.

  • Right: After a about year Zille finally played his Dom/Pro/Obf deck again. The deck features multiple copies of Sebastian Goulet, which single-handily shutdown the offensive capability of his prey's deck. Although he was steadily bled by Ralf, his situation was quite stable for most the game, and after he had moved both Sebastian Goulet and Soldat to the ready region, he had little trouble ousting first Thomas, then Martin using the usual Dominate Bleed cards.
The heads-up (as shown in the photos) was really a close match. Ralf was initially hampered by Zille's Carlton van Wyk and a Shadow Court Satyr, but eventually was able to profit from his higher pool when the heads-up started. Zille was only able to put Ralf on one pool, while Ralf then only needed to bleed for one himself when it was his turn (in round 10).

Result: Zille 2 VP, Ralf 2 VP (after about 65 minutes)

New MtG Expansion "Innistrad"

From a VtES perspective, or at least if you're interested in the whole vampire/werewolf/.. theme, it's interesting to note, that the next Magic: the Gathering expansion named Innistrad has a very strong horror angle. The expansion is subtitled "Horror Lurks Within" and the product information reads as following:
"Innistrad is a plane of menace and dread where every creature hides a darker aspect. Here, hedonistic vampires stalk the shadows to quench their thirst, and the full moon can transform a simple villager into a savage werewolf. Best to huddle inside, Planeswalker, lest the horrors of this world rend you limb from limb."

Each of the five colors has it's specific focus on an aspect of the horror theme:
  • White -- Angels/Clerics
  • Blue -- Ghosts/Mutants/Zombies
  • Black -- Vampires/Zombies/Demons
  • Red -- Vampires/Werewolves
  • Green -- Werewolves/Shamans
One of the most interesting aspects of the new expansion are the so-called double-faced cards (although the practical handling in the game is a nightmare). These double-faced cards are cards with two faces (two side with card text), but no regular MtG card back. The card is put into play with one specific side up, but this can change depending on certain conditions (if a creature died this turn, the number of spells being played, etc.) I think this gives the whole horror theme a nice twist in terms of the game mechanic.

And last not least, there are (at least) two cards in this MtG expansion that share names with cards in VtES, namely Murder of Crows and Wooden Stake.

Reference: Innistrad product page.

Post Scriptum: Yes, I am a little envious of the money WotC is able to spend on the artwork for the Magic cards (in contrast to most VtES cards).

Poll: Deck Build Lecture during the EC 2011?

During the upcoming European VtES Championship 2011, there's the possibility that the Swedish national coordinator, Isak Esbjörnsson BjÀrmark, will give a lecture about Swedish (and maybe more) deck building. But since the schedule during the EC from Friday to Sunday is so tight, the organizers need to know if someone is interested in such a lecture on Thursday (and when). To see how much interest for such a lecture is, I have initiated a poll on VEKN.net.

So if you plan attending the EC this year, please vote on this poll on VEKN.net. The questions (and the answers look like this: Do you want to participate in a lecture about deck building during Thursday?
  1. After Lunch.
  2. Before the Welcome Party.
  3. During Welcome Party.
  4. Whatever, I'm not interested.

Memorable Quotes (Part 123)

"Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity."
-- attributed to Seneca The Younger

Did you know, that ... (Part 75)

.. when you play an ammo card like Dragon's Breath Round and the ammo card is canceled by Direct Intervention, you can play another ammo card? The reason is that while most cards (like Immortal Grapple) say "only one <card of type xyz> can be played per turn/combat/..", the ammo cards say "only one ammo card be used (on a gun)". This implies that the ammo card is successfully played, and the ammo card was played (but never resolved), you can play another one, even one of the same kind.

If Dark Influences is played on an ammo card, you can't play the same ammo card again this turn, but you can play a different kind of ammo card, of course (with the same reasoning as above).

Madness is Contagious

Apparently the madness spreads .. not only rare cards like Enkil Cog .. or Summon History, common cards like Deep Song are affected as well. But at least there's some sort of explanation for this: Since Deep Songs are needed in higher quantities in deck than Summon History or Enkil Cog, more Deep Songs are sought after. And the smaller print runs of Keepers of Tradition and Heirs to the Blood didn't help either ...

If wishes were horses

"If wishes were horses, Beggars would ride" .. and if Vampire: the Eternal Struggle were like Magic: the Gathering, there would be a card like this:

And, of course, similar cards for handling the other disciplines as well ..

Announcement "Aire of Elation" VtES Tournament in Darmstadt, Germany

On October 8th, 2001 the "Aire of Elation" VtES Tournament will be held in Darmstadt, Germany. Darmstadt is a city in the state of Hesse in Germany, located in the southern part of the Rhine-Main area. The sandy soils in the Darmstadt area, ill-suited for agriculture in times before industrial fertilization, prevented any larger settlement from developing, until the city became the seat of the Landgraves of Hessen-Darmstadt in the 16th century. As the administrative center of an increasingly prosperous duchy, the city gained in prominence during the following centuries. In the 20th century, industry (especially chemical) as well as large science and electronics (later information technology) sectors became increasingly important, and are still a major part of the city's economy.

Deck of the Month: August 2011: Marcus, Marc and the Funky Bunch

This month's deck is the tournament winning deck "Marcus, Marc and the Funky Bunch" played by Robert Scythe. Essentially the deck is Lasombra Presence Vote deck, what gives the deck it's special twist is its defense based on Faerie Wards.
With the help of Marconius special ability (paying one less for Mytherceria cards), Faerie Wards can be played in bulk (10 copies in the deck) and is a terrific defense, especially against bleed and rush combat decks. The rather large number of discipline master cards are in the deck for two reasons, for one to allow Marconius to play Faerie Wards against any vampire at the table, and secondly to profit from political actions like Ancient Influence and Reins of Power.
The deck has a rather slow setup with no Information Highway, Zillah's Valley, etc. and only 2 Govern the Unaligned. Ousting power is also not massive, with only 6 damaging political actions and only 2 bleed actions and 1 bleed modifier. So the deck has to bid its time for the right spot when and where to launch its offensive.

Deck Name: Fire In The Blood: Marcus, Marc and the Funky Bunch
Author: Robert Scythe
Description:
Fire In The Blood
San Jose, CA USA
August 13th, 2011

20 players

This is my Faerie Guardian deck with a couple of changes. I put in a Lilith's Blessing for one of the Master Discipline cards (not Presence, of course) and replaced a Wake with an Eternal Vigilance nicking an idea from John Bell's more defensive Faerie Wards wall deck. I didn't mean to play this deck again in a tournament but I hadn't taken it apart and it felt right to play at the time. I did forget to put in the 2 Perfect Paragons that absolutely belong in it, luckily they didn't cost me the game.
